Galle Distrct was One of the Major District Affected by Tsunami
Galle district was one of the major districts affected by tsunami disaster of 26th December 2004, analyzing the impact of tsunami disaster there were 2886 houses partially and fully damaged within the buffer zone while an approximately twelve thousand number of houses fully and partially damaged out of the buffer zone. District Secretariat of Galle was able to complete its targeted task of reconstruction of fifteen thousand numbers of houses within the district with the support of national and international donor community.
There were two major housing reconstruction programmes were launched by the government, donor driven housing reconstruction programme for the families affected within the buffer zone and resettling them elsewhere and owner driven housing reconstruction programme where the owners themselves reconstruction their houses on the same location with the government and non governmental financial assistance. Under the donor driven housing programme there were 3740 houses constructed within 104 housing sites throughout the district and almost all the families affected by tsunami having received an alternative house for better living. Meanwhile there were certain problems arisen with regards to the quality of the donor built houses. Thus with the financial assistance from the German Government and the courtesy of Tsunami Housing Support Project (THSP) of Gtz, we were able to launched a wider survey of assessment of quality of the donor driven housing programme. The findings of the survey have been stored in computer software specially prepared for this purpose by Ruhuna University and the data’s are available with the district secretariat for future development and planning activities.
