Kandy DDMCU had initiated number of programmes to address landslide hazards.

Land slide, elephant attacks and forest fire are included in the overall Disaster Risk Profile of Kandy district in the Central Province. Experiences have shown that the landslides are one of major and widely spread natural disasters in the district. In the recent past, numbers of frequent landslide events have taken place in several Divisional Secretariat Divisions. In view of the tact, formulation and implementation of disaster response and mitigation programs is a vital need to save lives and properties. Accordingly, the District Disaster Management Coordination Unit (DDMCU) has implemented 21 risk assessment programs in the identified disaster prone Divisional Secretariat Divisions. Furthermore, five Divisional Disaster Preparedness & Response Plans have been finalized in Udapalatha, Udunuwara, Tumpane, Minipe and Medadumbara during last 06 months. Data collection activities for preparing Divisional Disaster Preparedness & Response Plans are being proceeding in seven DS Divisions namely Gagawatakorale, Yatinuwara, Poojapitiya, Pathehewaheta, Doluwa, Panvila and Udadumbara. There is a vital need for continuous sensitization of the communities those who are frequently exposed to natural disasters like landslides. Therefore, the Kandy DDMCU has conducted nine Community Based Disaster Risk Management programs, School disaster Awareness Programs and trainings for officers in “Vidatha Centre” in collaboration with relevant governmental institutions, NGOs and communities. The main objective of these programs is building capacity at grass root level.
