Location Based Information

Matara district is surrounded by a scenic sea belt and full of natural beauty. It possesses a proud history and is a fertile region situated between Galle and Hambantota districts in Southern Sri Lanka. It lies within 5.8 – 6.4 degree northern latitudes and 80.4 – 81.7 degree eastern longitudes. This district is 1282.5 Km or 128250 hectare in extent and extends with gradual altitude level upto 1158m from sea level at hilly region it consist of proud Sinharaja forest and attractive water falls. The district covers 1.96% of total extent of land of the Island and 23.14% 0f Southern Province.

            Matara district is bounded on the North by Kalawana Divisional Secretariat in ratnapura district, South by the attractive sea belt, East by Divisional Sectretariats named Okewela,Beliatte,katuwana,Walasmulla and Tangalle in hambantota district and west by Divisional secretariats named Habaraduwa,Imaduwa,Yakkalamulla,Thawalama and Neluwa.

            The district claims to a coastal belt 55 Km long which lies from Nilwella at Dickwella to Midigama in Weligama. About 85% of this coastal belt is covered by South  - West rains. The width of the continental shelf close to Matara district is about 7Km. In addition the district extends about 64 Km from the South towards the internal direction up to Sinharaja.

            Matara district consists of 16 Divisional Secretariats and 650Grama Niladhari Divisions.

                                                Pattern of climate.
            Matara district climatically belongs to wet zone of the low country. This pattern of climate lasts similarly to general condition of the island. The monthly temperature of the district records a higher rate in the months of February, March and April. But when considered with the months November and December no variation of the temperature can be seen. The average of the temperature for three decades is 26.7 º C.

                                                Historic information
            The history of Matara runs upto Ravana era and the author of the Mahawansa introduces this town with a great honour as the town og the hogh cast people and education centre of the wealth.

            This region in the past had been a mother of royals and got a priority in the field of studies. From the late 18th century to the beginning of 19th century in the literary period of Matara it was popular as the centre of religious studies. History of Matara was always appreciated by the intellectuals, patriots and poets. Firstly known as Mathota later became Matara.

            It has been proved with archeological evidences that Matara is a area where governed by the tribe “Naga” before the arrival of Wijaya. It has been shown that the king Mutaseewa and  prince Mahanama who fled to Ruhuna were Naga tribesmen. In addition, history says that Naga tribesmen had been living in areas such as Navimana, Nadugala, Naimwala and Naradda.
 

            The history says that the king  Dappula who was born in Ruhuna became fomous among the public by the name of Dapulusen. It was also recorded that the king great Wijayaba had been living in Matara area and was awarded with the post of Apa

            Kapparathota in Weligama as a port where foreign trade vessels were anchored and Agrabodhi Vihara of Weligama as a construction made in the period of Devanam piyathissa were mentioned  in ancient documents. Further Hathbodhiwatte and Matara Bodhi situated in the Matara city was a construction done in the period of  king Kumaradasa. According to above mentioned facts Matara district possesses a very proud history.
